Tom Cruise has put out a slew of popular films in his days as an actor, with his most notable box office hits being the Mission: Impossible series, which raked in another $693 million worldwide in 2011 to bring the series gross total to nearly $2.1 billion.

However, as we see in this Pop Culture Rewind, Cruise had his doubts about making a Mission: Impossible sequel, nonetheless a four-film series. At the film's London premiere in 1996, Cruise says that he is unsure of whether or not he will act in an M:I sequel.

"As a company we'll produce another sequel [but] I'm not committed to another sequel," he says, revealing that he will continue his role as co-producer of the film but not necessarily actor. "It would take a lot. It would have to be a great story...Our company, we're going to come with a great story but [I have] to see where the character's going to go. I'm not sure."

The then-34-year-old actor also talks about potential of a possible sequel to match or top the current M:I's strong box office opening, which eventually reached $457.7 million in its theater run.

While Cruise says its a "strong consideration" to ponder exceeding the success of the first M:I film, he theorizes about the film's ease of expansion due to its lack of parameters for style or setting.

"With this kind of film, you can do anything with it," Cruise says. "You're not committed to any particular location or even style of film making... [We'll] see how creative we can get in opening it up."

Mission: Impossible II went on to exceed its predecessor by $88 million.
